Edgar Trevor Williams, born on 29 Nov 1912, was the son of a clergyman. He was educated at Tettenhall College, Staffordshire〔Obituary in the Daily Telegraph, 28 June 1995〕 and then at King Edward VII School in Sheffield from 1928 to 1931. He obtained a Postmastership at Merton College, Oxford, and took a First in History. After a lectureship at Liverpool University he returned to Merton in 1937 as a junior research fellow.〔(Obituary in the New York Times )〕
